Day by day

Your 10-day Sri Lanka round tour.

A varied route that connects the island's cultural heartland, central mountains, wildlife-rich south, and coast.

Day01

Airport to Sigiriya and Minneriya

Your first wildlife experience

Meet your English-speaking driver at Bandaranaike International Airport and travel through the countryside towards Sigiriya. In the afternoon or evening, head into Minneriya National Park for a safari in search of elephants, deer, monkeys, crocodiles, and birdlife.

Wildlife sightings and the most suitable safari area depend on seasonal conditions and animal movements.

Why Minneriya matters

Minneriya National Park protects forests, grasslands, wetlands, and the ancient Minneriya Tank, a reservoir associated with King Mahasen in the 3rd century CE.

During the dry season, receding water creates fresh grass around the reservoir and can draw large numbers of wild elephants. Their movements vary with rainfall, water levels, and conditions across the wider landscape.

Day02

Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa

A rock fortress and an ancient royal capital

Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress and discover its gardens, frescoes, archaeological remains, and wide views. Continue to Polonnaruwa to explore ancient temples, statues, stupas, and royal buildings before returning to Sigiriya.

The story of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa

King Kassapa I made Sigiriya his capital in the late 5th century. Palace ruins crown the 180-metre Lion Rock, while gardens, galleries, frescoes, and the monumental lion gateway reveal the ambition of the royal complex.

Polonnaruwa became Sri Lanka's second capital after Anuradhapura. Its ruins combine Chola-period monuments with the 12th-century garden city developed under King Parakramabahu I.

Day03

Sigiriya to Dambulla and Kandy

Sacred caves and the cultural capital

Travel to Kandy with stops at Dambulla Royal Cave Temple and Nalanda Gedige, an ancient stone temple shaped by Buddhist and Hindu influences. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and enjoy a traditional cultural dance show.

Inside Dambulla and sacred Kandy

Dambulla has been a place of Buddhist pilgrimage for more than two millennia. Its five cave sanctuaries form Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave-temple complex, known for extensive murals and 157 statues.

Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhala kings. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic houses a relic revered as the Buddha's tooth and remains one of the country's most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites.

Day04

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and Ella

Tea country and one of Asia's great railway journeys

Travel into the central highlands, visit a tea plantation and factory, and stop at Ramboda Falls. Board the train at Nanu Oya for the celebrated journey through misty mountains, tea fields, forests, and valleys to Ella, where your driver will meet you.

How tea and the railway shaped the highlands

Commercial tea cultivation expanded across Sri Lanka's central highlands in the late 19th century, transforming the landscape and creating the industry behind Ceylon Tea.

The hill-country railway was built during the British colonial period to connect mountain plantations with Colombo. Today, its steep gradients, tunnels, and views make the journey between Nanu Oya and Ella part of the experience itself.

Day05

Lipton's Seat and Little Adam's Peak

Two viewpoints above the highlands

Start early for the panoramic views from Lipton's Seat across tea plantations and valleys. After time to relax in Ella, walk up Little Adam's Peak in the evening for mountain scenery around sunset.

Day06

Ella to Tissamaharama

Railway heritage, waterfalls, and rock carvings

Visit Nine Arch Bridge and, when the timetable allows, watch a train cross the historic viaduct. Continue past Ravana Falls to the ancient rock-cut Buddha statues at Buduruwagala before travelling to Tissamaharama.

Why Nine Arch Bridge and Buduruwagala matter

Nine Arch Bridge is an early 20th-century railway viaduct built from stone and brick. Its nine arches carry the hill-country line across a forested valley near Ella.

Buduruwagala preserves seven figures carved into a rock face, centred on a standing Buddha more than 15 metres high. The group is generally dated to the 9th or 10th century and reflects Mahayana Buddhist traditions.

Day07

Yala National Park to Mirissa

An early safari before the southern coast

Explore Yala National Park with an experienced safari guide. Look for elephants, crocodiles, deer, buffalo, monkeys, sloth bears, and, with luck, the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Continue afterwards to the beach town of Mirissa.

Wild animals move freely, so every safari is different and no particular sighting can be guaranteed.

Why Yala matters

Yala protects a varied landscape of dry forest, scrub, grassland, wetlands, and coastal lagoons. This range of habitats supports elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, abundant birdlife, and one of the world's best-known populations of wild leopards.

The park is a natural ecosystem rather than a zoo. Routes, weather, and animal behaviour shape every visit, which is why sightings can never be guaranteed.

Overnight: Mirissa

Day08

Mirissa

A day to slow down beside the sea

Swim, relax on the beach, or explore Mirissa at your own pace. Later, visit Coconut Tree Hill for its distinctive palms and views across the Indian Ocean.

Day09

Mirissa to Galle and Negombo

Conservation and coastal history

Visit a sea turtle hatchery and learn about local conservation work. Continue to UNESCO-listed Galle Fort to walk its ramparts and atmospheric streets among colonial architecture, shops, and cafés, then travel to Negombo.

The story of Galle Fort

Portuguese settlers began fortifying Galle in the 16th century. The Dutch expanded the stronghold in the 17th century, creating the ramparts, bastions, streets, and civic buildings that define much of the fortified town today.

The British later adapted the fort without replacing its essential layout. Its blend of European planning and South Asian setting helped earn Galle Fort UNESCO World Heritage status.

Day10
